Dublin, 16th December, 1999: Eight weeks of principal photography is currently underway in Dublin on The Smiling Suicide Club, which John Carney directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Daniel James. Produced by Dublin-based Hell’s Kitchen, The Smiling Suicide Club is financed by Universal Studios and Irish Government Tax Incentives.

The Smiling Suicide Club centres on a month in the life of Jonathan Breech, a 19-year old suicide patient, who is admitted to a psychiatric hospital by his older brother, following their father’s death. During the course of therapy, which Jonathan believes to be bogus, he meets and befriends two other teenage patients Rachel and Toby. Jonathan falls in love with Rachel and, in doing so, discovers a reason to live.

Boasting a cast of talented young newcomers and seasoned professionals, Irish actor Cillian Murphy (The Trench, Saltwater, Sunburn, Sweety Barrett) helms in the role of Jonathan. Joining Murphy are Tricia Vessey (Bean, The Brave, Kiss The Girls), Jonathan Jackson (The Deep End of the Ocean), Oscar and Golden-Globe nominee Stephen Rea (The Crying Game, Interview With The Vampire) and Gerard McSorley (Angela’s Ashes, The Boxer, Michael Collins, Braveheart).

27-year old director John Carney has garnered several awards as a writer and director for his two short comedy films Shining Star and Hotel. His first feature, November Afternoon was awarded Best Feature by The Irish Times in 1997. Carney’s most recent project, Park, a controversial story examining a paedophilia case in Ireland, premiered at the Dublin Film Festival this year and is screening at the Montreal Film Festival and New York Film Fleadh.

Produced by Jim Sheridan and Arthur Lappin’s Hell’s Kitchen, which was formed in 1992 following their collaboration on My Left Foot and The Field, the two have enjoyed enormous success, developing over 20 feature films including In The Name of the Father, Some Mother’s Son, The Boxer and Agnes Browne.

Sheridan and Lappin are joined by Ed Guiney who produced the Toronto and San Sebastian Film Festival hit, Sweety Barrett last year.

3.17.00- JJ mention in People

Jackson and Jackson
Joshua Jackson, who plays Pacey Witter on the WB drama Dawson's Creek, is often mistaken for another teen heartthrob, former General Hospital actor Jonathan Jackson. ''We get confused all the time because we have basically the same name,'' says Jackson, 21, who stars in the thriller The Skulls, due March 31. ''Or people think we're brothers.'' The confusion may explain why Joshua has been mentioned as a possible choice to play Anakin Skywalker in the next Star Wars prequel, which begins filming this summer, when it is actually Jonathan who is in the running for the coveted role. Not that Joshua would turn down a chance to play the future Darth Vader: ''The baddest man in the whole wide universe? Yeah, I could do that!''

3.17.00- The 2 Luckys Meet (Soap Opera Weekly)

Jacob Young came face to face with his Lucky predecssor when Jonathan Jackson stopped by the General Hospital set for a visit. "I walked into the makeup room, and there he was," Jacob recounts. "I was very surprised. It was like, 'Lucky, meet Lucky.' That sort of thing. It was very uncomfortable at first. I didn't know what to say to him. I wouldn't know what to say to anybody in that situation, especially when you're succeeding somebody. I didn't know how he felt about me taking over the role. We had not discussed any of it." But Jacob was quickly put at ease. "We talked briefly. I said, 'I hear everything is going great for you. I wish you the best of luck,' Jacob says. "Jonathan said, 'Thank you. This is for you.' And he handed me a card." Jacob took the card back to his dressing room to read it privately. It said: "I hope everything goes well for you. Thanks for keeping Lucky alive. God bless. Jonathan Jackson." According to Jacob, it was a note he won't soon forget. "That was the closure I needed," Jacob says. "Now I feel like I'm doing the right thing (stepping into the role of Lucky). Jonathan made me feel like I'm doing the right thing. He's a very gracious person, very genuine. I thought it was a pretty amazing note. After I read it, I went and tracked Jonathan down to say thank you. It meant a lot to me."

3.16.00- JJ went to the E! screening of Best Actress

3.16.00- JJ is mentioned in Teen Movieline
Rachel Leigh Cook is on the cover of this issue where Jonathan is featured in a pull-out on actors' heights. Jonathan is listed as being 5'8". There is also a picture. Thanks, Letty.

3.15.00- JONATHAN HAS BEEN NOMINATED FOR ANOTHER DAYTIME EMMY!!

Click here to see a list of all the nominations. According to a report of one lucky girl who recently won a phone call from Richard Lee, Jon WILL be attending the awards at Radio City Music Hall in NYC on May 19th! CONGRATS to Jonathan, and best of luck on him bringing home his FOURTH Emmy!!

3.12.00- Jonathan talks about not getting Star Wars in CBS Soaps In Depth
For his part, Jackson is taking the news in stride. "I'm defininitely not disappointed," he tells Soaps In Depth. "I've always looked at it as, if it happens that's great, and if it doesn't, that's okay too. There are a lot of other cool projects out there, and I'm just looking forward to digging into something else."

3.11.00- Major PURPLE HAZE info (yes, finally)

3.11.00- Although Jonathan made no appearances at the SOD awards, Tony Geary made some very nice comments about him in chat:

davidtomfan asks: Tony Gear congratulations to your SODA win!!!! *bowing to his greatness* I was wondering if you have had contact with Jonathan Jackson since he left the show?
Tony Geary: Oh yes, yes. Jonathan and I have dinner together quite frequently, he just completed a movie in Ireland called "The Suicide Club". The title may change. But yes, Jonathan and I will always be close. I'm happy to say he's a very dear friend. I've learned a lot from him.

Jodessa69 asks: Congratulations Tony Geary ! ! You Rock - How do you feel about the role of Lucky being recast ? You stated earlier in inveriews that you were against it ? What are feelings about it now ?
Tony Geary: Well, I was against it in the beginning. I wanted them to actually kill the character because Jonathan had put such a distinctive stamp on it, and is such an extraordinary actor, that I was concerned that recasting would be a mistake. But we have a wonderful actor playing Lucky now, Jacob Young, and I look forward to working with him. Unlike life, in soap opera, when people die, we can revive them with a new face, and I've lost enough people in my real life that I don't feel bad when we can recast. Jonathan left the show at a very good time for him personally, he's an extraordinary actor and he'll be a huge stage or screen star, whichever he chooses, and as painful as it was to lose him, I'm looking forward to redefining the relationship between Luke and Lucky with Jacob.

3.10.00- JJ mention on E! Online

http://www.eonline.com/Gossip/Marilyn/Archive2000/000310.html
Dear Marilyn: Jonathan Jackson was wonderful as Lucky on General Hospital. Any news on what he is doing now? Emma, Sacramento, California

Dear Emma: Jackson just wrapped an Ireland location shooting for director Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot). The project was the tentatively titled Smiling Suicide Club. He was the only American of an all-Irish cast in the drama about a group of suicidal teens in a mental hospital. The film has no release date at this time, but you can see Jackson in ABC's Trapped in a Purple Haze telepic on April 17. The former General Hospital star plays a middle-class kid who becomes a heroin addict. He's also still being considered to play Anakin Skywalker in the next Star Wars prequel/sequel. Incidentally, the hot young hunk and his brother, Richard, were voted Sexiest Brothers in a November issue of People magazine.

3.8.00- JJ mentions in April issue of Movieline

"Tongues are wagging over the high-six-figure king's fee Universal paid for 'The Age of Consent', a pitch by screenwriter Lamar Damon for an adaptation of Scott Spencer's novel 'Endless Love.' Some of you might remember Franco Zeffirilli's God-awful 1981 movie version of the same book that starred Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt. Apparently, Hollywood thinks the tale - about the obsessive relationship between a 17-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl - has all the makings of a 'William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet'-size hit if it's done right. Though no script from Damon has been turned in yet, insiders are already speculating who might be cast in the lead roles. Leelee Sobieski, Natalie Portman, and Jordana Brewster have been mentioned to play the beautiful heroine, and the names Josh Hartnett, Jonathan Jackson, and Ashton Kutcher are in the air for the part of the love-struck hero. Rumor is that Shields wants to do a cameo. Now, if only they can find Hewitt."

He is also mentioned in the "400 Facts about Hollywood" piece, where his claim to fame is his virginity. :)

3.5.00- ABC SID - "The Final Word: Will Jackson Play Anakin Skywalker?"

The verdict is in on whether Jonathan Jackson (ex-Lucky, GENERAL HOSPITAL) will appear as Anakin Skywalker in the next Star Wars prequel. "He's not doing it," says his manager, Tony Monziotti.

The In Depth Story: After recently telling Soaps In Depth that his client was going to sit down with Star Wars casting director Robin Gurland early this year when he returned from shooting The Smiling Suicide Club in Ireland, Monziotti would offer only a "no comment" as to whether Jackson ever took the meeting. However, Lucasfilm spokesperson Lynne Hale would not confirm that the GH alum had been ruled out. "Robin is meeting with hundreds of actors right now," she says, "and there haven't been any decisions."

Rumors about Jackson playing the future Darth Vadar intensified after an E! Online poll last summer named the soap alum the top choice of fans to succeed young Jake Lloyd, who played Anakin in last year's The Phantom Menace. That was followed by a Newsweek article citing showbix insiders as saying the three=time Emmy winner was a shoo-in for the plum part. "It's a done deal," the article stated.

Ironically, the Newsweek story may have worked against Jackson. "The article acutally hurt him," his agent, Jane Berliner, told Entertainment Weekly. "You know how George Lucas is -- they don't like that kind of publicity."

The Entertainment Weekly piece goes on to confirm that those actors still under consideration for the role include Leonardo DiCaprio, DAWSON'S CREEK star James Van Der Beek, Ryan Phillippe (ex-Billy, ONE LIFE TO LIVE), Eric Christian Olsen of FOX's GET REAL, and American Pie's Chris Klein.

As for Jackson, fans won't have to wait until Suicide Club is released to see him. He returns to the small screen on Monday, April 17, at 8 p.m. EST in the lead role of a drug addict in the ABC movie Trapped In A Purple Haze.

3.2.00- JJ in the March issue of PopStar Magazine (Thank you, Maria!)

Jonathan Jackson
Deep Talent

This young and rising star has been off of the hit soap opera General Hospital for less than a year, and he is already on his way to the big time.

He received critical praise for his portrayal of Michelle Pheiffer's son in The Deep End of The Ocean and Jonathan has not only been spending his time working on new acting projects, he's also been pursuing his music career. He first showed his strong musical talent as Lucky Spencer, and he's now recorded the album God Candy with his family band, Scarlet Road.

With Jonathan's hectic schedule, it's hard to track him down, but Popstar did. And he had plenty to say about music, acting and the possibility of returning to GH one day in the future.

Popstar: You're in the band Scarlet Road with your uncle, your dad and your brother Richard Lee - so how did that all come about?
Jonathan: Richard and I had been playing together for a year or so, and my dad plays bass guitar, so he just started jamming with us. My uncle moved down to L.A., and he's been staying for us awhile. It all just kind of happened naturally - we started playing together. It seemed to work really well.

How did you come up with the name?
The name is actually the name of my dad and uncle's garage band in the '60's.

What is your favorite song on God Candy?
Well, we try to do a lot of different styles, so it's kind of depends on what mood I'm in. If I'm in the mood for a slow song, I kind of like something like "God Candy." If I'm in the mood for a heavy rock song, there is a song called "Show and Tell" that's pretty heavy.

Do you do all of the singing?
Most of it. Richard does the lead vocals on two of the songs. I wrote all the music and lyrics to all of them, except for the two that Richard did.

Have you done live performances?
Here and there. I do some around L.A. and we did the Super Soap Weekend event in Disney World. It's kind of hard with the acting schedules.

The song "Elizabeth" that you sang on General Hospital - did you write that?
I wrote that one. It was my idea and I pitched it to them. I put it down on the four-track and then took it in to them and played it for them.

So how does it feel to be gone from General Hospital? Do you miss it?
I miss some of the people a little bit. I have been visiting there quite a bit, just too keep up with everybody, but I miss acting with Tony Geary, Genie Francis and some of the people there. I would still love to do it, but it just feels like the right thing to do, to get out and have time to do other stuff.

How would you feel if they recast the role of Lucky?
I don't know if they will or not. I know a lot of actors on the show don't want that to happen. I don't know if that would be the smartest thing for them to do. I don't know. If they did, I would hope they'd get a good actor who did the character the right way. I probably wouldn't let it get to me too bad. I'd hopefully be off focusing on other stuff.

Do you think you'll ever go back?
I don't know. It's not something in my plans right now. But...you never know.

You did a TV movie called Purple Haze, right?
Yeah, it's a movie for ABC - they're probably going to retitle it, but I am pretty sure it will be airing in March. It's about a young guy who falls in love with a girl who is kind of in the drug scene and he becomes a heroin addict.

What was "that" role like?!
It was a pretty intense project, but it was a good experience and I think it's going to turn out to be a really cool project.

Do you plan on sharing the screen with your brother?
Yeah, we have an independent movie that we did together. It's called True Rights. We don't really know where it's going. We don't have really a lot of scenes together. But we also cut three songs that we wrote for the movie.

Which do you prefer - singing or acting?
I'd love to do both. I want to incorporate and blend them if I could. Maybe do as much soundtrack stuff as I can.

How do you like to spend Valentine's Day?
I guess it depends on if I'm single or not. [Laughs] If I'm with somebody, then I guess I'll spend it with them. Other than that, I am trying to remember what I did last Valentine's Day. Last Valentine's Day, I remember having some really cool scenes on General Hospital. [Laughs]
